As breast surgeons, our group prides itself in offering the latest in surgical innovation and comprehensive treatment of breast cancer, benign breast disease and high-risk gene mutations. Within the clinic there will be opportunities to learn ultrasound and perform ultrasound-guided biopsies, and Dr. Catherine Pesce leads an ultrasound-guided biopsy curriculum in the NorthShore SIM lab for the fellow to improve personal technique using an inanimate model. As one of the first healthcare systems to have a dedicated program to the specialty of Oncoplastics, our team leads the way in surgical skill, education and training for surgeons. All surgeons have been trained in Oncoplastics and have learned techniques from Dr. Katherine Kopkash, a national leader in Oncoplastic breast surgery. Our group has experience in both wire and radioactive seed localization surgeries, and NorthShore performs more seed-directed surgeries than any other hospital system in the Chicagoland area. We offer nipple-sparing mastectomies as first line mastectomy for all patients when possible, and we are a part of a national clinical trial on the performance of robotic nipple-sparing mastectomies.
