How to Figure Out What Your Services May Cost
To budget for your healthcare expenses, it helps to know what to expect. NorthShore is committed to price transparency and has posted the lists of charges for inpatient and outpatient services (chargemaster). However, knowing charges alone is not likely to help patients understand their actual financial obligations or to compare costs between hospitals. In order to receive a more accurate estimate of charges and costs, we recommend the following three sources to help:
- Contact Your Insurance Company. Your insurance company can let you know if a service is covered, your copayment and coinsurance associated with the appointment type, and if you have deductibles you will need to pay out of pocket before your insurance company contributes to your bill.
- Review the Chargemaster. For a general overview of how your healthcare charges may be broken down, the Charge Description Master (CDM), or chargemaster, is a list of items that may be billed to a patient, insurance company or healthcare provider. These prices do not include the charges associated with physician or professional services that are typically billed separately:
- Get an Estimate. For an actual price estimate or questions regarding hospital charges, please contact 847.982.3924. Our counselors are trained to help provide patients with our best estimate of out of pocket costs and what you should anticipate in the billing process. To receive an estimate on common procedures, please use the Cost of Care Estimates Tool.
