Pharmacy Internship

Interested in learning what it's really like to practice pharmacy in a health system setting? Then consider applying for one of our Volunteer Summer Internships. These internships provided broad experience in a variety of settings at NorthShore including hospital, outpatient and oncology.

Program Dates: Summer, mid-May-August (start/end date dependent on school schedule)

Duration for 2016 Internship: 12 weeks, M-F

NorthShore University HealthSystem is offering unpaid student internship opportunities to candidates that meet the following criteria:

• Available at least 3 days per week to work. (alternatively 12 days per month-at discretion of preceptor)
• Requirements:
  • Pharmacy students completing P2 year and entering year P3
  • Minimum G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0
  • Active Illinois pharmacy technician license by start of internship

Interviews: Interested students are encouraged to apply early. Application packets will be screened as received and subsequent telephone interviews conducted on an ongoing basis. In general, telephone interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis through April 2016.

Internships Available

Inpatient - 4 positions, one at each of the following sites: Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, Highland Park Hospital, and Skokie Hospital. Students will work in an inpatient pharmacy setting. They will learn about aseptic technique, inpatient drug distribution, automation, clinical pharmacist services, and technician services. Activities will include patient assessment, project management, practice management, writing a newsletter article and other hospital pharmacy activities.

Outpatient - 1 position, rotating sites including Evanston Hospital. Students will work in a hospital outpatient pharmacy. They will learn about the management of an outpatient pharmacy in a hospital setting and will spend time in an anticoagulation clinic, integrative medicine clinic, home infusion & in other areas.

Oncology - 1 position, Evanston Hospital rotating sites including Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital and Highland Park Hospitals. Student will work in our outpatient oncology pharmacy. He/she will become proficient with IV chemotherapy admixture skills, and learn about different cancer disease states, patient counseling, and symptom management. Activities will also include gathering data for oncology related projects, writing a newsletter article and other activities.

Additional Details

• Each intern will be assigned a primary preceptor who will serve as a mentor throughout the duration of the internship. He/she will oversee the overall experience and will help monitor the assignment & completion of required projects.

• Participants will rotate through several core areas of practice. Time spent in each area will be tailored to meet individual interests.

• Students will actively participate in patient care activities by observing/assisting the pharmacists and taking part in related projects.

• Students will attend pharmacy management meetings, student/resident journal clubs, case presentations and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meetings.

• Students will complete one major project and will conduct a related presentation during the last week of the internship. Additional presentations may also be assigned for practice management meetings.

• Several minor projects will also be assigned and completed during each rotation.

• Relevant readings will be assigned during each pharmacy rotation and will be discussed with the preceptor.
