Housing and Quality of Life

Excellent housing is available in Evanston, Chicago, and the surrounding communities. Located three blocks from the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, Evanston Hospital is close to all the facilities and resources of Northwestern University's main campus and sports stadium. Evanston is a well established community with an active cultural and recreational life, easily accessible by both Chicago's elevated train system (the "L") and Metra, the commuter rail system servicing the suburbs. Evanston prides itself on a variety of dining options and one-of-a-kind shopping districts with unique stores and boutiques. Our spectacular lakefront offers swimming, sailing and boating, with over 80 parks and playgrounds, many of which are located on or near Lake Michigan.

Public transportation is excellent. Evanston Hospital is located across the street from the Central Street elevated ( "L" ) train stop. This train line makes all local stops in Evanston and Chicago. The Metra line, which links Evanston to downtown Chicago and the suburbs, is just a few blocks away. Free parking is available in the Evanston Hospital parking structure as well as at Glenbrook Hospital. Free shuttle service is also provided on an hourly basis between Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals.

Excellent meals are served in the hospital cafeterias. Meal coupons are available for residents on call. The house staff lounge at each hospital provides a comfortable "home base," complete with lockers, mailboxes and computer terminals. Residents have access to a comprehensive virtual library through the University of Chicago Crerar Library.

Intern Year Schedule at a Glance and the X+Y Model

The X+Y model is an innovative system that separates your inpatient and continuity clinic duties, coupling the continuity clinic with electives. In this model, when a resident is on an inpatient rotation (ICU, medicine floors, etc.), no member of the team will have continuity clinic. This allows the residents to focus on the inpatient rotation without interruption and maintains the presence and integrity of the entire team. Conversely, when residents are on an elective, they have two continuity clinic half-days per week. This allows for more continuity with their outpatients and easier follow-up.
