Department of Medicine Residency Programs

NorthShore University HealthSystem offers a three-year categorical Internal Medicine and Preliminary Year residency program.  Our combined programs have 4 Chief Residents, 34 PGY-1 residents, 16 PGY-2 residents and 16 PGY-3 residents.  Our program has achieved the longest possible ACGME accreditation length with no citations.

Categorical Internal Medicine (16 positions)

This foundation year in our three-year Internal Medicine program is geared to provide a mix of inpatient and outpatient internal medicine training.  Core rotations include general medical floor rotations at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals and one block of emergency medicine and ICU. Outpatient medicine training includes dedicated clinic weeks throughout the year.

Preliminary Internal Medicine (18 positions)

We match 13 Preliminary and 5 Preliminary-Neuro year residents. In preparation for further specialty training, preliminary Internal Medicine residents are provided with core internal medicine training through both inpatient and outpatient rotations.  Elective time and choices enables the resident to individualize curricular needs.  Each intern completes one block of emergency medicine and one block of IC as well as general medical floor rotations at Evanston Hospital.
