COVID-19 Studies

Join us in our fight against COVID-19

NorthShore has joined researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine to test the effectiveness of convalescent blood plasma outpatient treatments. We are recruiting people at high risk of exposure to COVID-19 or people who have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19 to join us in our fight against COVID-19.

CSSC-001 INFECTION PREVENTION

This study is for people at high risk of exposure to COVID-19.

You may qualify for this study if you have been in close contact within the last 3 days (72 hours) with someone with confirmed COVID-19 AND you do not have any symptoms of COVID infection and you have not been hospitalized.

Close contact with someone who has COVID means you:

  • Live in the same household, OR
  • Have had direct physical contact (hugging, kissing), OR
  • You are a healthcare worker not wearing proper PPE and hand washing, OR
  • You provide care for someone with COVID and are not wearing PPE and hand washing.

This study will test whether an infusion of plasma containing antibodies from recovered people can prevent uninfected people in a high-risk situation from developing COVID-19. Antibodies are part of the body’s immune system. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood that contains these antibodies.

Can I join?

You may be able to join if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Have been in close contact (see above) with an infected person within the prior 3 days
  • Do NOT have symptoms of COVID
  • Can travel to a nearby facility for enrollment

What’s involved?

  • One plasma infusion at enrollment with follow-up visits to a nearby facility (physical exam, swab test, lab tests) and telephone calls over 90 days.

CSSC-004 EARLY TREATMENT

This study is for people who have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19. You may qualify for this study if, within the prior 5 days, you have had a positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test (a swab of your throat or nose that finds virus) AND the sample was collected within the last 5 days, you have NOT been hospitalized AND you are still having symptoms of COVID-19.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Cough or shortness of breath
  • Fever or chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • New skin rash or neurological changes

This study will test whether a transfusion of plasma that has antibodies from recovered people will be a good early treatment for other people who get COVID-19 in the future.

Can I Join?

You may be able to join if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Have had a positive diagnostic test sample collected within the past 5 days
  • Are still having at least one COVID symptom at enrollment
  • Do not expect to be hospitalized within 24 hours of enrollment
  • Can travel to a nearby facility for enrollment and transfusion

What’s Involved?

  • One plasma infusion within a day of enrollment with follow-up visits to a nearby facility (physical exam, swab test, lab tests) and telephone calls over 90 days and a symptom diary you fill out between visits.
