Multi-center ESG Randomized Interventional Trial (MERIT-Trial)
Aims: NorthShore has been invited to participate in a Multicenter Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) Randomized Trial (MERIT) for weight loss alongside prestigious healthcare centers including Mayo Clinic, University of Texas at Houston, and Johns Hopkins.
If you have Type II Diabetes managed with non‐insulin medication (Metformin, Glimepride, etc.) and/or Hypertension managed with antihypertensive medication, you may qualify to participate in this surgical trial.
The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is an incisionless surgical procedure done to reduce the size of the stomach. An ESG reduces the amount of food and liquid your stomach can hold at one time. Having this procedure can help you eat less, better manage your weight and reduce the risks and adverse health effects that come from being overweight.
Note: This procedure does not remove fat from the body. It is one of many tools you can use to help you manage your weight. In order for this procedure to help you succeed, you need to eat healthfully and exercise.
Diagnosis: We are recruiting 25 total patients with a BMI between 30 and 40. 6 of these 25 cannot have significant comorbidities, 9 of whom must have Hypertension and take at least one antihypertensive medication, 9 of whom have Type II Diabetes who take non-insulin anti-diabetic medication.
You may be a candidate for the MERIT Trial if you:
- Have a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40. (Your BMI is based on your height and weight.)
- Have Type II Diabetes managed with non‐insulin medication(s)
- Have Hypertension managed with antihypertensive medication(s)
- Are willing to commit to participating in a medical trial for two years
- Are willing to work hard to reach your weight‐loss goal
Compensation: At the end of 2 years: $900 for control group and $800 for treatment group
