If I have additional psychiatric conditions, can I be treated with TMS?
The TMS procedure is currently only being used for patients suffering from major depressive disorder, and cannot be used to treat other conditions that are the primary problem. As long as major depressive disorder is primary, other psychiatric conditions may be present and TMS may be administered, but there is currently little evidence to predict whether other conditions will or will not improve, or even possibly worsen with TMS.
Do I need a psychiatrist? Do they have to be from NorthShore?
To qualify for TMS, you will need to be with a psychiatrist to request an evaluation and provide a referral letter – they do not need to be in the Endeavor Health Medical Group. If you have a psychiatrist outside Endeavor Health Medical Group, your psychiatrist will need to prepare and send our program a written summary of your major depression history and course of treatment, and specifically request evaluation for TMS. If you currently do not have a psychiatrist, our team will help with suggestions for referral.
Is TMS covered by my health insurance? Can I pay out of pocket?
TMS can be covered through Medicare, though some exceptions may apply. Contact your insurance company to find out if you are covered, and to be approved in advance.

If I do not want to take medication, can I still qualify?
You can still qualify, but insurance will not cover your care if you have not tried at least 4 antidepressant medications in 2 classes, and had a trial of structured psychotherapy for depression like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Are there any side effects to the treatment?
Side effects vary depending on the individual. Some patients experience headaches or soreness, which can be treated with over-the-counter medication. If you experience long term effects, contact your care team.
When should I expect improvements to appear?
Typically, patients who benefit from the TMS treatment will see results within 2-6 weeks of the start of treatment, though this varies depending on the individual. Not all patients will benefit from the procedure – your care team will work with you to consider next steps depending on results.
