Inpatient mental health services are available for individuals over age 12. Adult services are centered at Evanston Hospital, while services for adolescents and young adults (ages 12-24) are centered at Highland Park Hospital. Inpatient care is reserved for individuals in crisis whose safety requires a highly structured environment. Both inpatient programs provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Adolescent & Young Adult Behavioral Health Center – Highland Park Hospital
Completed in fall 2003, the 12-bed unit was designed specifically for the therapeutic treatment of adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, and young adults aged 19 to 24 years. The inpatient unit is the safest option for patients who are at risk for harm or have problems that cannot be managed safely on an outpatient basis. The unit’s structured, therapeutic environment provides a dual diagnostic evaluation, multidisciplinary assessment and treatment planning and integrated skills-focused programming.
The unit provides specialized case management. Each patient is assigned a staff member who maintains close contact throughout his or her stay, through group therapy and individual counseling sessions during each shift. The atmosphere of the program is that of a therapeutic milieu, which brings patients and staff members together in a variety of structured settings, activities and interventions. Group living and social skills are practiced to foster corrective emotional and social experiences. Family sessions for stabilization and discharge planning are provided by licensed social workers. Close partnering with the students’ schools for continued study and school transition is coordinated by the unit’s education specialists.
Adult Inpatient Unit – Evanston Hospital
Patients ages 18 and older with all psychiatric diagnoses are accepted to this 21-bed unit.
The unit provides inpatient care in a therapeutic environment in a secure setting. We provide an intensive program that includes assessment and treatment within a therapeutic milieu. The multidisciplinary team develops individualized treatment goals and plan of care. Goals are focused on assisting in the resolution of the precipitating crisis and helping patients develop alternative coping and problem-solving skills. The therapeutic team includes licensed clinical social workers; occupational and recreational therapists; registered nurses; mental health counselors and is directed by the attending psychiatrist. Treatment modalities include individual and group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, therapeutic activities, medication management and patient education. Each patient has a social worker assigned to assist with care planning, collaboration with outside treatment providers, needs assessment and discharge planning. Patients are supported in the establishment of concrete discharge plans that will facilitate and maintain stability.
