Vestibular (Inner Ear)

Vertigo and balance problems can result from vestibular (inner ear) disorders that may cause symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadness, blurred vision and nausea. NorthShore’s experienced therapists have advanced training and certification to treat common vestibular disorders that typically respond well to physical therapy. These vestibular dysfunctions include:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Inner ear impairment due to drugs
  • Vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis

Additional dysfunctions with symptoms of dizziness and imbalance that may respond to vestibular therapy include:

  • Cervicogenic Dizziness (dizziness due to neck dysfunction)
  • Head Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Multisensory Balance Deficit
  • Stroke

Evaluations include assessing eye movement; static and dynamic balance; gait; risk for falls and motion sensitivity. Our team also performs positional assessments for BPPV to determine if canalith repositioning, the use of slow maneuvers to position the head to alleviate vertigo symptoms, might be helpful. Based on the assessments, NorthShore’s trained therapists will develop an individualized treatment plan focused on helping patients improve balance and reduce vertigo in daily functional activities.

Physical therapy sports concussion management is also part of the vestibular rehab program. Integral members of NorthShore’s multidisciplinary Sports Medicine team, our physical therapists routinely collaborate with specialists in orthopaedics, primary care sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and others to provide patients with comprehensive care. They also work closely with renowned experts in NorthShore’s Concussion and Head Injury program.
