Foot & Ankle

The lower extremities can take a beating, from simply walking to the bus stop to running in a marathon.

NorthShore’s physical therapists evaluate and treat a variety of foot and ankle problems. They perform evaluations specifically geared to looking at an individual’s body alignment and biomechanics with movement. Assessments may include the use of video gait analysis of walking or running to develop the best treatment plan. Individually guided strengthening, balance training, shoe wear education, soft tissue mobilization, taping, and modalities may be incorporated as needed into a patient’s treatment.

Custom or over-the-counter orthotics may help with mechanics and pain relief. Our physical therapists are skilled in fabricating and custom-fitting orthotic inserts and may recommend them for those with foot and ankle problems.

Our foot and ankle therapists work closely with referring physicians. Additionally, they are integral members of NorthShore’s multidisciplinary Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine teams that provide both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for the full range of foot and ankle problems, from Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis to ankle sprains and fractures.
