The lower extremities can take a beating, from simply walking to the bus stop to running in a marathon.

NorthShore’s physical therapists evaluate and treat a variety of foot and ankle problems. They perform evaluations specifically geared to looking at an individual’s body alignment as well as biomechanics with movement. Assessments may also include the use of video gait analysis of an individual walking or running on a treadmill from different vantage points to develop the best treatment plan. Soft tissue mobilization, taping, modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation, balance and strengthening exercises and/or shoe ware education may be incorporated as needed into a patient’s treatment.

Custom or over-the-counter orthotics can often help with mechanics and pressure relief. Our physical therapists are skilled in fabricating and custom-fitting orthotic inserts and may recommend them for those with foot and ankle problems.

Our foot and ankle therapists work closely with referring physicians. Additionally, they are integral members of NorthShore’s multidisciplinary Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine teams that provide both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for the full range of foot and ankle problems, from Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis to fallen arches and fractures.
