Participating in sports and fitness activities often puts competitive athletes as well as weekend warriors at risk for musculoskeletal injuries. Whether you have torn a calf muscle or are suffering from tennis elbow, rehabilitative therapy can help put you back on the road to recovery by regaining function and preventing further injury.

The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services team assists in returning athletes to their sport as safely and effectively as possible. Our physical and occupational therapists work closely with NorthShore’s Sports Medicine experts. These specialists in orthopaedics, primary care sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation may all participate in the athlete’s rehabilitative care.

Our experienced therapists also focus on conditioning the athlete to reduce injuries due to over use, promote stability and minimize any biomechanical dysfunction contributing to the individual’s problem. Our team may utilize an Alter G anti-gravity treadmill using NASA’s Patented Differential Air Pressure technology to unweigh you, allowing  you to walk and/or run at just a fraction of your body weight as part of your treatment. We also provide education and recommend strategies to help you avoid future sports-related injuries.

NorthShore has developed a number of specialty clinics and screenings focused on treating the needs of athletes. Using the latest in motion and biomechanical analysis, we uniquely offer programs that assist runners, golfers and other sports enthusiasts in identifying potential injury risks. Our rehabilitation experts also provide injury assessment screenings for performance artists such as dancers and musicians. For adolescents, we offer an ACL injury prevention class.
