Aquatic therapy assists patients with orthopaedic and neurological conditions to work toward their therapy goals in a decreased weight-bearing environment. Easier on the joints, aquatics may be used as an alternative to or in conjunction with traditional land therapies. Water-based therapy can help:
- promote muscular and overall relaxation
- reduce pain sensitivity
- increase peripheral circulation
- reduce edema
- improve body awareness, balance and core strength
Patients with orthopaedic injuries (particularly those of the lower extremity), arthritis, low back pain, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and neurological weakness due to stroke often respond well to this type of rehabilitative program.
We offer individual and group warm-water aquatic classes at our NorthShore fitness center-based clinics in Evanston, Glenview and Buffalo Grove. Classes focus on rehabilitation after back injury and post-joint replacement and for people living with arthritis. We also offer prenatal and postnatal aquatic programs.
