Vascular Medicine

Our vascular medicine physicians provide comprehensive care for circulatory system diseases and clotting disorders, involving arteries, veins or lymphatics. A variety of vascular conditions, from blood clots to vasculitis, can be diagnosed and treated noninvasively and without surgery.

Blood clots demand prompt, up-to-date personalized medical attention to improve long-term outcomes and minimize the likelihood of recurrence. We have long been a leader in the prevention and care of venous thromboembolisms or DVTs: in 1991, the widely used risk assessment tool known as the Caprini Score was developed and introduced at NorthShore. Our knowledgeable vascular medicine team carefully assesses the surgical risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism to individualize preventive care and treatment strategies. Additionally, our NorthShore Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (NS-PERT) provides immediate comprehensive care for individuals with life-threatening blood clotting disorders.

In addition to diagnosing and treating peripheral artery disease, our vascular specialists have expertise with other vascular conditions, including Raynaud’s disease and fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). We also provide screening and prevention of premature atherosclerotic disease.

At NorthShore, we offer several disease specific subspecialty clinics including a thrombophilia clinic (blood clots) as well as an arteriopathy clinic for diseases of the arteries such as FMD and spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). A leading cause of death, cancer-associated thrombosis requires specialized care. We provide a sub-specialty clinic focused on meeting the needs of patients with cancer, who are at higher risk of developing blood clots due to their disease. These outpatient clinics are among only a handful of such clinical services in our area that provide expedited specialty care. We gladly accommodate patients who are seeking a second opinion on, often unusual, vascular syndromes.

Our knowledgeable vascular medicine clinicians use state-of-the-art testing modalities and the latest medications and therapies so that you receive the very best of customized care.
