About Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to take images of the tissue inside of the breast. During the exam a radiologist will pass a transducer back and forth over the area of interest.
A breast ultrasound does not replace the need for a mammogram, but is used to evaluate an area of clinical concern or an abnormal mammographic finding. A breast ultrasound can be used to see whether a lump is filled with fluid (a cyst) or if it is a solid.
Note: We do not perform screening ultrasounds. As recommended in the guidelines of the American College of Radiology, we only target areas of clinical concern.
How Will I Learn the Results?
The radiologist will discuss the results of the ultrasound study with the patient at the conclusion of the exam.
