NorthShore Named to the Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list for a Record 20th Time

March 4, 2019 – NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) has been named to the IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list for a record 20th time and is also listed among the top 15 major teaching hospitals in the country.

Hospitals included on the list outperformed their peers in several important categories in the analysis from IBM Watson HealthTM, formerly called the Truven Health Analytics study. Using data from 2013 to 2017 for most metrics, the survey found that hospitals on this year’s list had:

  •     25% lower inpatient mortality
  •     19% fewer complications
  •     19% fewer infections

These hospitals also had shorter average lengths of stay and shorter wait times in the emergency department, and lower inpatient costs. If all hospitals were to achieve the same performance benchmarks as those included on this year’s list, according to IBM Watson HealthTM, it would save an additional 103,000 lives and generate inpatient cost savings of $8.2 billion.

“We strive every day to provide exceptional patient care across our entire system, and we’re very proud to again receive this prestigious national recognition of our work. And to have done so a record 20 times is amazing,” said NorthShore President and CEO J.P. Gallagher. “I congratulate all of our physicians and staff for their outstanding work and their dedication to our patients and the communities we serve.”

The study has been conducted annually since 1993 and assessed 2,752 hospitals across the country. Hospitals are divided into five categories based on their size, and NorthShore was categorized as a Major Teaching Hospital, one of 15 such hospitals to make the list.

“At a time when research shows that the U.S. spends nearly twice as much on healthcare as other high-income countries, yet has less effective population health outcomes, the 100 Top Hospitals are setting a different example by delivering consistently better care at a lower cost," said Ekta Punwani, 100 Top Hospitals® program leader at IBM Watson Health.
