Alexandru Barboi, MD, to Lead the New Autonomic Laboratory

Alexandru Barboi, MD, FACP, 48, neurologist, has joined NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), to lead the new Autonomic Laboratory at Glenbrook Hospital. He will also serve as the Director of the Neuromuscular and Peripheral Neurophysiology Program.

“Dr. Barboi brings a unique expertise in neurology and medicine to NorthShore,” said Demetrius Maraganore, MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Medical Director of the NorthShore Neurological Institute. “We are very fortunate to have him on the team and look forward to incorporating his autonomic expertise and also to his leadership of our Neuromuscular and Peripheral Neurophysiology Program.”

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is part of the nervous system that controls subconscious and visceral functions including heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, salivation, perspiration, swallowing and more. The Autonomic Laboratory at NorthShore offers the latest technology and expertise to diagnose and treat ANS disorders in adults and children. 

“I am incredibly excited to join this world-class neurology team,” said Dr. Barboi.  “I enjoy taking care of people with complex neurological conditions with the hope of improving patient outcomes and increasing the neurological function that impacts their quality of life.”

With more than 15 years experience, Dr. Barboi is board certified in internal medicine, neurology, autonomic disorders, clinical neurophysiology and neuromuscular disorders.

He received his medical degree from Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest, Romania in 1990 and completed his internal medicine residency at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, IL and neurology residency and clinical neurophysiology fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Barboi practiced for over a decade at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a Midwest regional leader in autonomic disorders before relocating to Chicago and joining NorthShore.

Dr. Barboi resides in Chicago, with his wife and children and enjoys long distance running.
