Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension
Dr. Stuart M. Sprague is Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. His areas of special interest include kidney stones, metabolic bone disease, hyperparathyroidism, post-transplant bone disease, and renal osteodystrophy. Dr. Sprague is an internationally recognized expert in renal bone disease and vitamin D metabolism and a leading researcher into its impact on chronic kidney disease and hyperparathyroidism.
In his role as chief, Dr. Sprague has overseen the growth of the division’s staff and services. He has added both nephrologists and researchers and has established a staff of nurse practitioners and a dietician. He identifies his staff as “a very strong academic and clinical team that works well together.” Together with his staff, Dr. Sprague has developed the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic as well as the free standing home dialysis program.
Prior to joining NorthShore University HealthSystem in 1995, Dr. Sprague was Director of the University of Chicago Renal Bone Program and Medical Director of the University of Chicago Hospitals Chronic Hemodialysis Unit. He has also been the recipient of a Fulbright Professorship.
