This healthy Shamrock Shake, aka a festive, vibrant green smoothie, is our go-to for St. Patrick's Day this year.

Healthy Shamrock Shake

"I like this recipe because it's lower in saturated fat and higher in protein via the milk that's used in it. For those who are dairy-free, soy or Ripple milk are excellent alternatives. Consider adding a sweetener such as honey, maple syrup, or stevia extract to make it sweet like the original McDonald’s version!" says Alyssa Carlson, Clinical Dietitian Specialist, NorthShore's Department of Clinical Nutrition.

This healthy take on a McDonald's Shamrock Shake is easy to whip up, calls for only 7 ingredients, and takes less than 5 minutes to make with a blender. Vanilla gives the shake flavor and avocado gives it its green tone.

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup baby spinach
  • 1/4 of an avocado
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6–8 fresh mint leaves
  • 3/4 cup milk (or non-dairy milk alternative)
  • Optional: 2 tsp of honey for added flavoring
  • Optional: coconut whipped cream and/or cacao nibs or chocolate shavings for garnish

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients, in the order listed above, to a high-speed blender. Blend until smooth. Serve cold.
  2. Optional: garnish with coconut whipped cream and/or cacao nibs or chocolate shavings.
