An MRI is a specialized, computer-guided procedure that combines the use of a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. This noninvasive test enables our team of experts to properly diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions such as tumors, heart disease and cancer. The MRI procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. In order to better visualize the blood vessels, an injection of contrast dye may be given.
There is no preparation necessary for this test except the removal of all metal (e.g.: jewelry, watches, glasses, etc.). You will be asked to fill out a screening form before the test to assure your safety. Patients with pacemakers and certain other implants are not eligible for this exam.
At NorthShore, MRI scans are part of our seamless collaborative care. Your radiologist and referring physician work together, sharing their expertise to provide the most accurate results. These MRI scans are accessible in your electronic medical record, making it easy for your clinical team to collaborate on your care on an ongoing basis.
