Head and Neck Surgery

Head and neck cancers encompass a variety of tumors found in the upper aerodigestive tract—a part of the body that involves many organs essential to talking, eating and breathing. The tongue, tonsil, salivary glands, voice box, sinuses and thyroid are common areas of abnormal tissue development and cancer growth.

At NorthShore, we offer cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures, including transoral laser and robotic surgeries to treat certain head and neck cancers. For patients needing more extensive surgery, we work hand-in-hand with reconstructive surgeons to preserve function and maximize appearance. For many sinonasal tumors, our ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists collaborate with neurosurgeons to provide less invasive endoscopic skull base surgery through the nose to remove tumors.

NorthShore was an early adopter of sentinel lymph node biopsies for oral cancer. We offer this minimally invasive technique for certain patients with early stage oral cancer to sample lymph nodes. In many instances, these biopsies can help patients avoid more extensive neck surgery.

The complexity of treating head and neck cancers demands an advanced level of surgical skills not found at all centers. NorthShore features fellowship-trained otolaryngologists with specific expertise in head and neck surgical oncology. This level of specialization ensures patients receive comprehensive, personalized care to achieve optimal outcomes.
