Therapeutic Yoga, Meditation, and Stress Relief Practices

Yoga is a centuries’ old science, philosophy, set of physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation techniques. The practice of yoga can be highly therapeutic, providing tools to realize optimal health on all levels of our being—body, mind and spirit. Yoga can help balance the nervous system, relax the body, build strength, and focus the mind to alleviate stress, prevent disease and maintain a balanced state of health.

Meditation includes practices to quiet the chaotic nature of the mind, deepen focus and concentration, and relax the nervous system. It promotes mindfulness and being fully present in this moment with greater awareness.

Stress has been shown to be one of the key contributing factors in all major disease states. Among the techniques used to alleviate stress, breathing exercises have a powerful affect on the nervous system by reducing the “fight or flight” stress response. The benefits of yoga include deeper sleep, stronger concentration and increased feelings of tranquility and calm, which all help counteract the effects of stress.

At NorthShore, we offer individualized sessions in yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation practices. We also offer a Yoga for Cardiac Health Class that focuses on freedom in the body, deep breathing and taking the body out of the “fight or flight” stress response.
