Essure Procedure for Tubal Sterilization

The Essure tubal sterilization procedure is a minimally invasive and permanent method of birth control for women. During an in-office procedure using local anesthesia, small coils, which gradually close over a period of about three months, are placed inside the fallopian tubes. Following the three month period, your physician will order a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) dye test to check for complete closure.

Ideal candidates for this procedure should not be planning to have another child. For the three months after the Essure procedure is performed and until the tubal sterilization is complete, another form of birth control must be used. Once this procedure is performed it cannot be reversed.
