First Gynecological Exam and Health Maintenance

Between the ages of 16 and 18, adolescents should make their first appointment for a gynecological exam. To establish care and form the foundations for healthy living, the physician will perform a physical exam (weight and blood pressure) and discuss health maintenance, risky behaviors (such as unsafe sex) and proper hygiene.

The following topics will also be reviewed with your teen at her gynecological exam:

  • Immunization status
  • Medical history
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Sexual activity
  • Tobacco, alcohol and drug use

During the first gynecologist visit, a pelvic exam may or may not be performed depending on age and whether or not your teen is sexually active. A yearly pelvic exam is recommended after becoming sexually active or after the age of 21.
