Treatment for Pleural Effusion
Patients with recurrent, symptomatic accumulation of pleural fluid can have their symptoms treated more definitively. An Interventional Radiologist can place a soft, semi-permanent chest tube (Pleurx catheter) into the fluid collection under imaging guidance. This tube can be accessed for drainage at home every other day, which keeps the patient’s breathing comfortable. If the fluid dries up, the catheter can then be removed.
