Uterine fibroids are one of the specific causes of chronic pelvic pain. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths on the uterus. The location of the fibroids can vary:
- Submucosal fibroids develop under the inner lining of the uterus, creating a bump-like appearance.
- Intramural fibroids grow within the uterine wall, and can grow to distort the shape of the uterus.
- Subserosal fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus.
Uterine Fibroids Symptoms and Diagnosis
Fibroids do not always have noticeable symptoms, as they often cause mild changes such as heavier periods. If the fibroids grow, the bleeding can become longer and more painful, and more symptoms can appear:
- Pressure in the abdomen
- Urinary issues, such as frequent urination and pressure on the bladder
- Lower back pain caused by pressure on spinal nerves
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Anemia brought on by heavy bleeding
- Pregnancy complications
Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids
Not all uterine fibroids need to be removed. Your physician will determine a course of action, and may prescribe over-the-counter pain medication or birth control pills, and continue to monitor them during future pelvic exams.
