This procedure utilizes a thin flexible tube called a catheter, with a balloon on the tip, to widen your artery passageway and allow the blood to flow freely through your artery.

What to Expect

You will most likely be admitted to the hospital the day of the procedure. The Cardiologist may prescribe medication to help you relax before the procedure. The Cardiac Cath Lab staff will clean and shave your skin where the catheter will be inserted. Once in the procedure room, you will be situated on an X-Ray table and covered with sterile drapes. A local anesthetic is given by injection to keep you from feeling any pain.

A catheter is inserted and gently guided toward your heart while your doctor is watching the advancement of the catheter on a video monitor. The catheter position is changed multiple times throughout the test. Dye will be injected into the catheter in certain areas of your heart chamber and arteries to help visualize the areas.

Once the narrowing of the artery is located, the balloon is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wall. Once the blood flow is improved, the balloon is deflated and the catheters are removed. You will need to remain lying down for a few hours to prevent bleeding, and you will most likely be discharged the following day.

What to Do

The night before your angioplasty, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight. You will need to arrive at the hospital at least one hour prior to your appointment, the time will be specified by your physician office. If you wear glasses, please bring them so you may read consent forms and educational material which will be provided to you when you arrive.
