This procedure is an ultrasound of the heart which shows the heart chambers and valves from the inside of the heart.

What to Expect 

Expect to be in the Cardiology Department for 2-3 hours. Prior to the test, a topical anesthetic is sprayed into the back of the throat to numb the area and other medications will be given by a Nurse to relax and moderately sedate you. An endoscope is placed through the mouth and into the esophagus. Echocardiographic images will be obtained through sound waves from the endoscope. These echo images will be displayed onto a television monitor for the Cardiologist to evaluate.

What to Do 

Do not eat or drink 12 hours prior to the test. You will not be able to drive or perform hazardous tasks for 12 to 24 hours after the test if you are sedated. 

After scheduling an appointment,you may pre-register by phone 2 days prior to the test by calling 847.492.6900. If you have not been pre-registered over the phone you should arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and report to the Registration Department.  You will be asked to provide billing and insurance information at that time.
