An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart which utilizes sound waves to examine the shape, motion and blood flow of the heart.

What to Expect

The test will take about 45 minutes to perform. A technician will place a transducer with gel onto the chest area and move it around to produce images of your heart. These images will be displayed onto a television monitor for the technician to visualize, and they will also be recorded for a Cardiologist to review. This procedure can show the size, thickness, and pumping strength of the heart as well how the valves function.

Formal written results will be available to your physician within 24 hours.
Your doctor may also be contacted by telephone immediately afterwards for abnormal results.

What to Do

Wear comfortable clothing that is easily removed above the waist.

After scheduling an appointment, you may pre-register by phone 2 days prior to the test by calling 847.492.6900.  If you have not been pre-registered over the phone you should arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment and report to the Registration Department.  You will be asked to provide billing and insurance information at that time.
