By entering into a genetics consultation, you are not only obtaining information for yourself. You will be learning information that could be very useful for other family members. Seeking information regarding a hereditary condition can be a difficult decision to make, but many people see genetic counseling as an opportunity to explain why a condition or set of conditions has been occurring in their family.
We spend time discussing the risks to other family members because genetic conditions can have an impact on them; some risks could be life-threatening. However, the Center for Medical Genetics staff cannot directly communicate this information to your family. We discuss ways for you to share this knowledge with key family members at risk. One way we can help is through writing family letters, which you can then distribute. The information provided can impact their medical management and potentially save lives.
