Organization Profile

Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is a comprehensive, fully integrated, healthcare delivery system that serves the Chicago region. The system includes four hospitals in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie. NorthShore employs approximately 9,000 and has 2,400 affiliated physicians, including a 700+ physician, multispecialty group practice with over 75 office locations under NorthShore Medical Group. Further, NorthShore supports teaching and research as the principal teaching affiliate for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

The NorthShore Research Institute focuses on clinical and translational research, including leadership in outcomes research and clinical trials. The NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation is the primary philanthropic entity of NorthShore. The Foundation raises charitable contributions and engages volunteer friends in support of NorthShore’s ongoing mission to preserve and improve human life.

NorthShore has annual revenues of $1.6 billion. The integrated health system has significant capabilities in a wide spectrum of clinical programs, including cancer, heart, orthopaedics, high-risk maternity, pediatrics and the newly formed NorthShore Neurological Institute. There are more than 50 physicians on staff at the Neurological Institute—many nationally and even internationally recognized in their field.

NorthShore is a Magnet recognized organization, the only one in Illinois designated as a system to receive this prestigious honor that demonstrates excellence in nursing and high standards in patient care. NorthShore is a national leader in the implementation of innovative technologies, including electronic medical records (EMR). In 2003, NorthShore was among the first in the country to successfully launch a system-wide EMR with demonstrable benefits in quality, safety, efficiency and service to patients. NorthShore has been recognized by multiple national organizations for this notable achievement.

NorthShore Evanston Hospital Evanston Hospital

With a history dating to 1891, Evanston Hospital is the nucleus of the NorthShore University HealthSystem. Evanston Hospital demonstrates leadership in cancer and cardiac care, providing specialized cancer services at the Kellogg Cancer Center and comprehensive heart care at the Cardiovascular Care Center. Physicians work alongside leading researchers to translate the latest technology, treatment and research into improved patient care. As the regional center for high risk obstetrics, the Women's Hospital offers a comfortable birthing environment where high risk mothers and their babies have access to the latest technology and a highly trained staff. The Hospital is also a licensed Level I Trauma Center.

For three consecutive years, NorthShore's Evanston Hospital has been recognized as a top national hospital by Leapfrog Top Hospitals list. And significantly, Evanston Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Illinois and one of 33 hospitals nationwide to achieve this honor.

Recently, we invested in advanced technology and in a better physical environment for both patients and staff. Patients and visitors now enter a dramatic three-story atrium with a water wall and fireplace; a business center allows visitors to use their time productively while a family member receives treatment. Among other improvements is the remodeling of the ambulatory surgery area to bring patient registration, operating rooms and a family lounge together in one convenient place.

NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital Glenbrook Hospital

Glenbrook Hospital, established in 1977, is a multispecialty medical center providing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.  A Level II Trauma Center, Glenbrook Hospital opened a new 25,000 square-foot Emergency Department in Spring 2011.  It features 30 private rooms including six critical care/trauma bays and three triage rooms.  Glenbrook Hospital is a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center—providing an acute stroke team 24 hours a day, seven days a week for rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Glenbrook Hospital specialties include the Kellogg Cancer Center, Patricia Nolan Center for Breast Health, Simms Family GI Lab, Eye and Vision Center and Total Joint Replacement Center.  In addition, the hospital offers a leading edge interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization laboratory.  Near Glenbrook Hospital, NorthShore University HealthSystem at Glenview Park District Park Center offers an Integrative Medicine Program, rehabilitation services, community wellness programs and retail herbal and wellness pharmacy.

The new John and Carol Walter Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) at Glenbrook Hospital is slated to open in 2012.  The John and Carol Walter Ambulatory Care Center will house the new John and Carol Walter Center for Urologic Health.  In addition, the ACC will be the hub of the NorthShore Neurological Institute, the region’s preeminent provider of advanced care for brain and spine conditions, as well as a new and expanded Kellogg Cancer Center.

NorthShore Highland Park Hospital Highland Park Hospital

Founded in 1918, Highland Park Hospital has provided high-quality healthcare and a wide range of clinical programs for the people of Lake County and beyond for nearly a century. The hospital is the site of the first open heart surgery in Lake County and is a key partner in bringing important healthcare programs to area residents. Highland Park Hospital's Kellogg Cancer Center offers the most comprehensive subspecialty care for oncology patients. Specialized physicians provide care for the following types of cancer: thoracic and lung; hematology; breast; ovarian; head and neck; melanoma and sarcoma; gastrointestinal; prostate; and stomach.

Highland Park Hospital is a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center – providing an acute stroke team 24 hours a day, seven days a week for rapid diagnosis and treatment. A wound care center gives patients access to the most comprehensive wound treatment program on the North Shore.  The Emergency Department at Highland Park Hospital participates as the region's "pod" hospital for disaster response activities, coordinating Lake County's efforts when confronted with a disaster. A wide variety of mental health services, including a center for eating disorders, adolescent psychiatric care and the Doreen E. Chapman Center for substance abuse, are also available.

NorthShore Skokie HospitalSkokie Hospital

Skokie Hospital is a full service healthcare provider offering patients access to a vast network of resources. Established in 1963, Skokie Hospital has provided high-quality healthcare for nearly five decades, and the acute care hospital is nationally recognized for its expertise in orthopaedics, cardiac care and cancer care. Key specialties and features also include minimally invasive surgery, total joint replacement, a women’s health center, a gastroenterology lab and graduate medical education (residency) programs in internal medicine, general surgery and anesthesia. In addition, Skokie Hospital's Level II Trauma Center—Emergency Department—is staffed by experienced trauma team members specially trained in pediatric life support.

Skokie Hospital is in the midst of a multi-year, $150 million renovation and expansion that will ensure the hospital continues to provide the community with exceptional medical care for years to come. This investment will mean expanded core clinical services and enhanced patient care, and will include more private rooms, a new Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Radiology Suite, expanded and upgraded radiology, cardiology and nuclear medicine services, and a new, 125,000-sqaure-foot Ambulatory Care Center, set to open in late 2012.

NorthShore Medical Group

NorthShore University HealthSystem Medical Group is comprised of more than 700 employed primary and specialty care physicians throughout Chicago and the north and northwest suburbs of the city. A single unified medical staff is in place for the system. Physicians can admit patients to any of the four NorthShore Hospitals.

NorthShore Research Institute

In October of 1996, NorthShore created the NorthShore Research Institute to serve as a focal point for its substantial and growing research activities. The NorthShore Research Institute now houses nearly 200 externally funded research faculty who currently occupy over 125,000 net square feet of research space and work on over 1000 active research protocols. Total external funding is now over $100 million. Funding from the NIH places the hospitals of NorthShore University HealthSystem among the top 10 comprehensive independent research hospitals in the country.

In addition, NorthShore has made a substantial commitment to develop a new Center for Clinical and Research Informatics to conduct expanded research using informatics. Such infrastructure will enable large scale efforts on comparative effectiveness, clinical outcomes, and practice based research. The Center and its work will build on our award winning Epic medical records system, providing a focus for growing faculty involvement in research.

NorthShore Foundation

Created in 2003, the NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation strives to enhance philanthropic support and develop strategies to build advocacy for NorthShore University HealthSystem and the world-class care it provides.

NorthShore Foundation is dedicated to assisting the integrated healthcare delivery system to fulfill its mission to "preserve and improve human life." It seeks to obtain the philanthropic support required to ensure that NorthShore can provide medical care, advanced research, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. It builds relationships with individuals and the community to increase awareness of high-quality services and giving opportunities. The Foundation also assures that contributions are used wisely and appropriately.

NorthShore has had continuous community support throughout its history. However, with falling reimbursements, rising high tech costs and escalating malpractice insurance, we must now broaden our support.
