Headquartered in Evanston, Ill., NorthShore University HealthSystem, (NorthShore), is a comprehensive, fully integrated, healthcare delivery system that serves the greater North Shore and northern Illinois communities. NorthShore includes four Hospitals – Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, Highland Park Hospital and Skokie Hospital, added in January 2009. The system has more than 2,000 affiliated physicians, including a multispecialty group practice with over 75 office locations under NorthShore Medical Group.
Further, NorthShore is committed to excellence in its academic mission and supports teaching and research as the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. With more than $100 million of grants, NorthShore Research Institute focuses on clinical and translational research, including leadership in outcomes research and clinical trials. NorthShore Foundation seeks to obtain the philanthropic support for ensuring the health system can provide advanced research and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
NorthShore has annual revenues of $1.5 billion and a staff of more than 8,000. The integrated health system has significant capabilities in a wide spectrum of clinical programs, including cancer, heart, orthopaedics, high-risk maternity and pediatrics. NorthShore is a national leader in the implementation of innovative technologies, including electronic medical records (EMRs). In 2003, NorthShore was among the first in the country to successfully launch a systemwide EMR with demonstrable benefits in quality, safety, efficiency and service to patients. NorthShore has been recognized by multiple national organizations for this notable achievement.
Evanston Hospital

With a history dating to 1891, Evanston Hospital is the nucleus of the NorthShore University HealthSystem. Evanston Hospital demonstrates leadership in cancer and cardiac care, providing specialized cancer services at the Kellogg Cancer Center and comprehensive heart care at the Cardiovascular Care Center. Physicians work alongside leading researchers to translate the latest technology, treatment and research into improved patient care. As the regional center for high risk obstetrics, the Women’s Hospital offers a comfortable birthing environment where high risk mothers and their babies have access to the latest technology and a highly trained staff. The Hospital is also a licensed Level I Trauma Center.
For three consecutive years, NorthShore’s Evanston Hospital has been recognized as a top national hospital by Leapfrog Top Hospitals list. And significantly, Evanston Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Illinois and one of 33 hospitals nationwide to achieve this honor.
Recently, we invested in advanced technology and in a better physical environment for both patients and staff. Patients and visitors now enter a dramatic three-story atrium with a water wall and fireplace; a business center allows visitors to use their time productively while a family member receives treatment. Among other improvements is the remodeling of the ambulatory surgery area to bring patient registration, operating rooms and a family lounge together in one convenient place.
Glenbrook Hospital

Opened in 1977, Glenbrook Hospital is a 143-bed hospital facility offering high-tech medical care in a community hospital setting. Few hospitals of its size deliver such diverse services as cardiac care, including cardiac catheterization and ultra fast CT scan; total hip and knee replacement; the Eye and Vision Center for LASIK and other eye surgery; and neurological services including a new sleep center, a cognitive and memory disorder program and a Parkinson's Disease clinic. Glenbrook Hospital also features a top notch gastroenterology (GI) suite with advanced technology. Paired with a highly qualified team of physicians, the GI program is among the strongest in the region for research, diagnosis and treatment. Children's at Glenbrook provides outpatient pediatric services and ambulatory surgery in partnership with Children's Memorial Hospital.
A Level II Trauma Center, the Emergency Department of Glenbrook Hospital has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for patient satisfaction and offers a Fast Track service for prompt responsive treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.
Near Glenbrook Hospital, the NorthShore University HealthSystem Suite at the Glenview Park District Park Center offers several services, including an Integrative Medicine Program, appointments with physicians in Rheumatology and Physical Medicine, rehabilitation services, community wellness programs and a retail herbal and wellness pharmacy.
Highland Park Hospital

Founded in 1918, NorthShore’s Highland Park Hospital has provided high-quality healthcare and a wide range of clinical programs for more than 80 years. The 239-bed Hospital is the site of the first open heart surgery in Lake County. Highland Park Hospital’s Kellogg Cancer Center offers the most comprehensive subspecialty care for oncology patients within Lake County. The specialized physicians provide care for the following types of cancer: thoracic and lung; hematology; breast; ovarian; head and neck; melanoma and sarcoma; gastrointestinal; prostate; and stomach.
The Highland Park Hospital campus recently has established a new stroke center that complements the enhanced neurology services. In addition, a new wound care center gives patients access to the most comprehensive wound treatment program on the North Shore. It offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help patients recover faster and leads to better clinical and quality outcomes. A new, improved Simulation Laboratory gives first responders—paramedics, physicians, nurses and other health professionals—ongoing training to enhance their skills.
With a renovated Emergency Department, Highland Park Hospital participates as the region’s "pod" hospital for disaster response activities, coordinating Lake County’s efforts when confronted with a disaster.
Skokie Hospital

Founded in 1963, Skokie Hospital has provided high-quality healthcare for nearly five decades. The 175-bed acute care hospital is nationally recognized for its expertise in cancer care, cardiac care and orthopaedics.
The Illinois Foundation for Quality Health Care has recognized the Hospital as one of 43 hospitals nationwide for its Surgical Care Improvement Project Commitment to Quality Award. Additionally, in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Survey, Skokie Hospital scored in the top 50 percent of participating hospitals in 2007 and 2008. For its comprehensive cardiac care, the Hospital was named one of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery programs. Skokie Hospital’s Level II Trauma Center—Emergency Department—is staffed by experienced trauma team members specially trained in pediatric life support.

Walgreen Jr. Building on the Evanston Hospital campus. Emphasis is on translational and clinical research allowing discoveries from the basic sciences and engineering to be brought promptly to the bedside. Funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) places the Hospitals of NorthShore University HealthSystem ninth among the top 10 multispecialty independent research hospitals nationwide.
NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation
Created in 2003, the NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation strives to enhance philanthropic support and develop strategies to build advocacy for NorthShore University HealthSystem and the world-class care it provides.
NorthShore Foundation is dedicated to assisting the integrated healthcare delivery system to fulfill its mission to "preserve and improve human life." It seeks to obtain the philanthropic support required to ensure that NorthShore can provide medical care, advanced research, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. It builds relationships with individuals and the community to increase awareness of high-quality services and giving opportunities. The Foundation also assures that contributions are used wisely and appropriately.
NorthShore has had continuous community support throughout its history. However, with falling reimbursements, rising high tech costs and escalating malpractice insurance, we must now broaden our support.
