Caring for Elvin Bethea, Football Legend
We recently welcomed Elvin Bethea, all-star defensive end for the Houston Oilers from 1968 to 1983, and 2003 Hall of Famer. Bethea had been struggling with severe hip pain when he met Ravi Bashyal, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at NorthShore specializing in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement.
“I was introduced to Elvin and his wife Pat at the Hall of Fame Enshrinement last year, and I knew right then that we could heal his hip,” Dr. Bashyal says. “We operated on his hip using the latest minimally invasive techniques and innovative technology we helped design. It’s so gratifying to see him up and walking just a couple hours after surgery. Elvin was soon on his way back to Houston to get on with his life, back to his garden and fishing—pain free.”
“I feel great,” Bethea says. “Honestly, for what I’ve been through for over a year and how I feel now, it’s night and day. There’s a lot of people who really want to get behind you and get you back to the norm. And that’s what it’s all about.”
Former Seahawk Steve Largent Gets a Pro Checkup
NorthShore recently welcomed Hall of Famer Steve Largent for a neurological and orthopaedic consultation. The retired Seattle Seahawk wide receiver and former Oklahoma U.S. House Representative met with Julian E. Bailes, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and co-director of NorthShore Neurological Institute, and Ravi Bashyal, MD, FAAOS, director of outpatient hip and knee replacement surgery and Professional Football Hall of Fame Health site medical director.
