Orthopaedic Sports Medicine

The focus of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine is to assist athletes of all ages and fitness levels to remain active, healthy and pain free. NorthShore’s board-certified and fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Sports Medicine surgeons are experts at diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries, including ligament sprains, muscle/tendon strains, fractures, cartilage injuries, labral tears and many other related conditions.

Our specialists count among their patients professional athletes from Chicago’s sports teams, including the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Fire, USA Hockey, USA Rugby and U.S. Soccer, as well as Chicago Marathon competitors. We also expertly care for youth competitors and amateur athletes throughout the Chicagoland area. Our skilled physicians fully understand the physical demands athletic endeavors place on the body’s musculoskeletal system and develop ideal treatment plans that best return injured athletes to their active lifestyles.

At NorthShore, we care for patients using advanced arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques. While striving to perform the most conservative surgical approach first, our surgeons also have pioneered innovative options not always available at other medical centers. For example, we are leaders in regenerative medicine techniques, including cartilage transplantation procedures for the knee and other joints. Our experience and expertise in this emerging area has attracted international Orthopaedic Sports Medicine surgeons to NorthShore for advanced surgical training.

Our surgeons also have been leaders in the development of an innovative treatment for ACL tears using a single hamstring tendon as the graft. ACL tears are an impactful injury commonly affecting athletes of all ages and activity levels. Surgical reconstruction of the ACL has progressed over the past 30 years, including this minimally invasive, less-traumatic surgical technique that has significant advantages during rehabilitation after surgery.

Patient safety is always our primary concern. In addition to state-of-the-art surgical procedures, we continually seek to develop new strategies to improve quality of care. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons recently recognized our Sports Medicine team for research focused on reducing risks related to blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain during shoulder surgery.

Surgery is only one part of the equation in helping athletes return to their playing field or venue of choice. Our Sports Medicine surgeons collaborate with multiple related disciplines, including Physical and Occupational Therapy to ensure professional athletes as well as weekend warriors regain full function, strength and flexibility.

Our Orthopaedic Sports Medicine team uses advanced techniques to treat all sports injuries and conditions including:
