President and Chief Executive Officer
Gerald ‘J.P.’ Gallagher assumed the role of NorthShore President and Chief Executive Officer in November 2017. As CEO, NorthShore has continued to grow through the aggressive expansion of immediate care sites, adding new hospital partners, and the creation of Chicagoland’s only freestanding orthopaedic and spine hospital. Quality and patient safety performance also have dramatically improved as measured by Leapfrog, Healthgrades, CMS, and U.S. News and World Report rankings.
He currently is leading the creation of a new system through the merger of NorthShore and Edward-Elmhurst Health. The new system combines nine award-winning hospitals, 25,000 team members, and serves more than 1.3M patients across the Chicagoland region.
In his previous role as Chief Operating officer, Mr. Gallagher was responsible for overall system operations, clinical quality results and financial performance.
Prior to becoming COO, Mr. Gallagher served as President of Evanston Hospital, the flagship teaching hospital for the NorthShore system. Evanston Hospital has been recognized as a Top 100 Hospital and Top 15 Major Teaching Hospital by IBM Watson Analytics for twenty-two years – more than any other health care system in the nation. Mr. Gallagher was recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the nation’s “Up and Comers” in 2010.
Before joining NorthShore, Mr. Gallagher served in a variety of hospital leadership roles with Advocate Health Care at its Christ Medical Center campus. He also completed his Administrative Fellowship at Advocate. He started his health care career as an Analyst at The Lewin Group, a health care consulting firm in Washington, DC.
Mr. Gallagher received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania on a scholarship from the Kaiser Family Foundation. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Healthcare Leadership Council, and the Young Presidents Organization. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Illinois Hospital Association and the Board of Advisors of Catholic Charities of Chicago.
