Back and neck conditions are some of the most common causes of pain and disability in the United States. This kind of pain can be recurring and incredibly distracting, keeping people from doing the things they’d like to do every day.
But that’s not the way it has to be. The experts at NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center help you minimize back pain and return to a full, healthy life as quickly as possible. Our integrated team of spine experts provides a seamless patient experience at convenient locations across the area, including Chicago, Skokie, Glenview and Lake County with access to a spine physician expert within 7 days.
NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center specialists take a collaborative, conservative approach to back pain treatment. Working side by side and linked by a fully integrated electronic medical record, our multispecialty team devises the best treatment plan for each patient, including a variety of surgical options ranging from minimally invasive back surgery to advanced surgical procedures. We strive to use non-surgical back pain treatment whenever possible.
Non-Surgical Back Pain Treatment Options
At the NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center, we begin back pain treatment as conservatively as possible, looking to non-surgical options where appropriate. And we have an extensive variety of treatment options to offer, based on any patient’s specific needs. Those include Physical Therapy, Interventional Procedures and Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Dean Karahalios and Dr. Joseph Alleva, two of our many experts, discuss the wide range of back pain treatment options at the NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center.
Physical Therapy
Our physiatrists and therapists educate patients on proper body mechanics and establish individualized exercise programs they can follow at home. These help maintain core muscles and keep pressure off the spine, which is vital to most back pain treatments. By stretching tight muscles affecting the injured area and strengthening weak muscles supporting the injured area, the patient is allowed to heal naturally.
Interventional Procedures
Sometimes using interventional procedures to get pain-relieving medicine straight to the source of the pain can make a huge difference for a patient’s comfort. Our specialists tailor these procedures to the specific needs of each patient.
Integrative Medicine
Every patient is different, so we keep our minds open to a full spectrum of back pain treatments. Integrative Medicine can complement a patient’s holistic back pain treatment plan, in conjunction with any other therapies. Options include acupuncture, chiropractic care, yoga, biofeedback and more.

Surgical Back Pain Treatment Options
For many patients with back pain, back surgery may be necessary—either at the outset of treatment or after we’ve tried conservative treatment options. You’ll feel confident to know that NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center has one of the most experienced, specialized surgical teams in the region.
Our experts are at the forefront of spine surgery techniques and procedures, and have the knowledge and experience to safely, effectively perform even the most advanced surgical procedures, including minimally invasive surgical procedures.
NorthShore Medical Group Spine Center employs the latest technologies in back surgery to allow for more accuracy and shorter procedures, improving outcomes and recovery time.
Minimally Invasive Back Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery achieves the same results as traditional operations on the spine, but is performed with much smaller incisions and little or no cutting of muscle. Your surgeon will help you determine if you are a candidate for minimally invasive surgery.
Specially designed instruments are inserted through keyhole-sized incisions. With the aid of endoscopes (small cameras), the surgeon can see deep inside the spine without removing the muscle that covers it, often resulting in less pain, scarring and blood loss, as well as quicker recovery times and even lower health care costs compared to traditional back pain surgery treatments.
