Research Interests:
Dr. Garfield’s research interest focuses on the role of parents in the health of children, with particular emphasis on 1) father’s involvement in health, 2) mothers and postpartum depression, and 3) how public policies support families and children. Most recently, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar for his four-year project examining issues of responsibility around identifying women at risk for postpartum depression. His work has appeared in peer reviewed journals such as JAMA, Health Affairs, Pediatrics, and Ambulatory Pediatrics. He is currently a member of the editorial board for the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, providing expertise in men’s health.
In 2007, Dr. Garfield was one of four physicians appointed College Mentor for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine’s Class of 2011. College Mentors are chosen for their excellence in research, clinical care, and teaching and serve for four years as teachers, advisors, and role models for one quarter of the medical school class from matriculation to graduation. He is also a member of the Evanston Hospital Pediatric Hospitalist team caring for hospitalized children and sees outpatients in the Child and Adolescent Center, a clinic dedicated to the care of uninsured/underinsured children and families.
