Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a disorder of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) caused by progressive damage to the outer covering of nerve cells (myelin) and subsequently the nerve fibers. This results in decreased nerve functioning, which can lead to a variety of symptoms.

NorthShore University HealthSystem offers compassionate, multi-disciplinary care for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and related disorders including optic neuritis and myelitis or myelopathy. Our experienced neurologists and dedicated nurse-clinician work collaboratively with neuro-radiologists, urologists, psychologists, physical therapists and social workers to help individual patients manage the disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our specialists meet with patients for a thorough history and physical evaluation and make use of the latest technology to diagnose MS including MRI, evoke potentials and lumbar punctures when indicated. Since the progression and severity of MS can be highly variable; our practiced neurologists focus on individualized management designed to improve patients’ quality of life. Our multi-disciplinary, team approach is critical to helping patients deal with the myriad of challenges associated with MS.

There are currently three main categories of treatment for MS. Acute exacerbations or relapse of symptoms are usually treated with corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents. Long-term management of MS is generally recommended with immuno-modulating medications. And thirdly, there are many drugs used to treat some of the most common symptoms of MS attacks like spasticity, bladder problems and pain or tingling.

Research Means Patients have Options

Because we participate in multiple clinical trials, our patients have access to new and promising treatment options. Current studies involve therapies for the relief of MS-related fatigue as well as a new drug trial designed to help relapsing-remitting MS patients. Please call 847.570.2570 for more information.

Patient and Family Support

NorthShore Neurologists are active participants in community and regional patient-focused activities for MS. A support group for MS patients meets the third Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8pm at Evanston Hospital. For more information, call Deanne Basofin at 847.673.3554 or email her at dwbasofin@sbcglobal.net. A No Visible Signs support group is currently being formed at Glenbrook Hospital as well.
