Dr. Dean Karahalios and Dr. Joseph Alleva, two of our many experts, discuss the wide range of back pain treatment options at the Neurological Institute.
Back and neck conditions are some of the most common causes of pain and disability in the United States. This kind of pain can be recurring and incredibly distracting, keeping people from doing the things they’d like to do every day.
But that’s not the way it has to be. It’s our goal to help patients to think differently about their upper and lower back pain, and providing a variety of treatment options is the key. Good news: NorthShore Neurological Institute offers one of the most comprehensive back pain treatment programs in the region.

Non-surgical Options
At NorthShore Neurological Institute, we begin pack pain treatment as conservatively as possible, looking to non-surgical options where appropriate. And we have an extensive variety of treatment options to offer, based on any patient’s specific needs. Those include Physical Therapy, Interventional Procedures and Integrative Medicine.
Physical Therapy
Our physiatrists and therapists educate patients on proper body mechanics and establish individualized exercise programs they can follow at home. These help maintain core muscles, which in turn keep pressure off of the spine. By stretching tight muscles affecting the injured area and strengthening weak muscles supporting the injured area, the patient is allowed to heal naturally.
Interventional Procedures
Sometimes using interventional procedures to get pain-relieving medicine straight to the source of the pain can make a huge difference for a patient’s comfort. Our specialists tailor these procedures to the specific needs of each patient.
Integrative Medicine
Every patient is different, so we keep our minds open to a full spectrum of treatments. Integrative Medicine can complement a patient’s holistic back pain treatment plan, in conjunction with any other therapies. Options include acupuncture, chiropractic care, yoga, biofeedback and more.

Surgical Options
For many patients, surgical intervention may be necessary—either at the outset of treatment or after we’ve tried conservative treatment options. You’ll feel confident to know that NorthShore Neurological Institute has one of the most experienced, specialized spine neurosurgical teams in the region.
Our experts are at the forefront of spine surgery techniques and procedures, and have the knowledge and experience to safely, effectively perform even the most advanced surgical procedures.
These include minimally invasive surgical procedures, for patients who qualify.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) achieves the same results as traditional operations on the spine, but is performed with much smaller incisions and little or no cutting of muscle.
Specially designed instruments are inserted through keyhole-sized surgical incisions with the aid of endoscopes (small cameras). This allows the surgeon to see deep inside the spine without removing the muscle that covers it.
Minimally invasive surgery is available in special cases for patients who are candidates, and it often results in less pain, scarring and blood loss, as well as quicker recovery times and even lower health care costs.
