Three urologic diseases often affect men as they age. Prostate enlargement (called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) causes problems with urination in 50% of men at age 50 and virtually all men at age 80. Erectile dysfunction—often an underrated concern—affects 22% of men at age 40 and almost half of men at age 70. While almost 28,000 men annually die from prostate cancer, pressing questions remain about who should be screened and which patients require treatment.
