Man lifting weightsIf you think a good fitness routine means hours of grueling workouts, think again. A recent study in men averaging 59 years of age showed that even a modest amount of exercise yields significant health benefits. Commenting on the findings, the lead researcher noted that a man can cut his risk of death in half just by taking a brisk 30-minute walk 5 or 6 days a week.

It’s easy to see why exercise leads to better, longer lives. It can prevent or control many diseases, reduce stress, improve your mood, and enhance your brain function. It can also help you lose weight—especially important because more than 300,000 overweight Americans die prematurely each year.

Before starting a new fitness routine, check with your doctor. Think about how you can get both “aerobic” exercise that increases your heart rate and breathing, and “anaerobic” exercise that builds muscles and strengthens bones. Of course, you can head to the gym. But also look for easy ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine: walking, climbing stairs, doing yard work, exercising while watching television. Sports are great fitness boosters, but be careful of sports-related injuries
