Pastoral Care

A number of pastoral care resources are available for patients and visitors.  Staff chaplains can provide spiritual counsel and emotional support, facilitate sacraments and offer hope and comfort through  patient hospitalizations.  Our pastoral staff consists of representatives from the Jewish and Christian faiths.  In addition, we maintain connections to other faith traditions in the greater Chicago community to assist patients with their religious needs.

The following resources are also offered: An interfaith chapel located on the second floor is open 24 hours a day for quiet meditation and reflection.  Holy communion and other sacraments may be brought to patients' rooms at their request; Jumah (Muslim) prayers are said in the Chapel every Friday from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.; Jewish Sabbath candles may be delivered to patient rooms on Fridays at their request; a chaplain is always willing to stop by your room to respond to concerns of decision-making, faith, hope, reconciliation and/or prayer.

An additional pastoral care resource is the services of a music therapist who uses music to address acute or chronic pain, anxiety or stress, nausea and other physical discomforts as well as to improve and enhance spiritual well-being.  This service aims to enhance, maintain and restore the human spirit and body so you can better cope with the difficulties and discomforts associated with illness and injury. To request a visit from a music therapist, call 847.480.2607.

To request Pastoral Care and Healing Arts Services or a chaplain, call 847.432.2733.  At a patient's request, we can also inform their minister, priest, rabbi or spiritual leader that they are in the hospital.

Mail and Flowers

A volunteer will deliver mail and flowers to patients Monday through Friday and will be happy to mail outgoing letters.  Flowers, postcards and stationary are available for purchase in the Alcove Gift Shop on the first floor or at our online gift shop.  Please note that the Hospital does not permit flowers in the Intensive Care Unit.  Flowers will be returned to the florist.  Flowers that arrive after patients leave the hospital will also be returned to the florist.

Newspapers and Books

Volunteers distribute complimentary copies of the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times to patient rooms Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.  On weekends, contact Concierge Services for newspapers at 4-YOU (4968).  These newspapers are also available weekdays and weekends in vending machines located in the main lobby.  Volunteers are available to bring reading materials to patient rooms Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For more information call the Volunteer Office at 847.432.3919.
