Michael Goldberg, MD (Division Head)

Dr. Michael J. Goldberg is the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology.  His main area of interest is pancreaticobiliary tract disease and colon cancer prevention and detection.  Since joining the GI Division in 1999, Dr. Goldberg has significantly expanded the division’s services by adding physicians, technology, clinical research and expanded educational components.   He helped to establish two new research centers at NorthShore University HealthSystem, a colorectal cancer research and genetics center and a pancreatic cancer research clinic.  Before becoming the Division Head for NorthShore University HealthSystem GI, Dr. Goldberg was the Director of Therapeutic Endoscopy at the University of Chicago Hospitals as well as the Chief of Gastroenterology at Weiss Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Goldberg practices at both Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals. 

Douglas Adler, MD

Dr. Douglas Adler completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He received his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine.  Following an internship and residency at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Dr. Adler completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  His interests are in gastrointestinal disorders especially inflammatory bowel disease and he welcomes all patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.

Alan Auerbach, MD

Dr. Alan Auerbach's area of interest is the endoscopic treament of GERD, nonsurgical treatment of hemorrhoids and therapeutic pancreaticobiliary endoscopy.  He is Chief of GI at Northwest Community Hospital.  He practices and performs procedures at both Highland Park Hospital and Northwest Community Hospital.  He is board certified in Gastorenterology and Internal Medicine. He has lectured both nurses, physician's and the general public in endoscopic reflux treatment, in which his experience in Illinois is unmatched. He has been using IRC for the treatment of hemorrhid for over 20 years. His office practice is in Buffalo Grove. 

Shailesh Bajaj, MD

Dr Bajaj received his general gastroenterology training form Medical college of Wisconsin and graduated in 2006.  Subsequently he trained in interventional advanced endoscopy (Endoscopic ultrasound and Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) with Dr Maurits J. Wiersema in Indiana, who is an internationally recognized authority, and former chief of Endoscopic Ultrasound, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

Laura Bianchi, MD

Dr. Laura Bianchi is a Notre Dame graduate and completed her medical training at Northwestern University.  More recently Dr. Bianchi was the chief gastroenterology fellow at the Cleveland Clinic.  Dr. Bianchi’s clinical and research interests include colon cancer prevention and inflammatory bowel disease.  She is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology’s Women in Gastroenterology Committee and has a special interest in women’s health.

Dr. Kenneth Chi's interests are in gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary malignancies, and welcomes all patients with gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders.  Dr. Chi completed his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College in Ohio. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Following an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dr. Chi completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago. He has also completed a year of advanced endoscopy training at the University of Chicago specializing in endoscopic ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration of GI and pancreatic lesions as well as therapeuitic ERCP for pancreaticobiliary disease.

Gene Chiao, MD

Dr Eli D Ehrenpreis is the Chief of Gastroenterology and Head of Endoscopy at Highland Park Hospital. He is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine and is Board Eligible in Clinical Pharmacology. Dr Ehrenpreis’ practice is focused on general gastroenterology. He has special research interest in functional bowel disorders, radiation injury of the gastrointestinal tract, microscopic and other forms of colitis, pelvic floor disorders and mesenteric panniculitis. He has developed several novel treatments for these conditions. Dr Ehrenpreis has published more than 60 original articles and 16 review articles on subjects related to gastrointestinal disease and clinical pharmacology. He has authored 15 book chapters for textbooks in Gastroenterology, Colorectal Surgery, Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Dr Ehrenpreis has coauthored three books including the Clinician’s Handbook of Prescription Drugs and The Prescription and Over the Counter Drug Guide for Seniors, both published by MacGraw-Hill.  He has authored the book, Anal and Rectal Diseases Explained, published by ReMedica. He is an invited reviewer for a number of medical journals and has lectured around the world.

He previously served as full clinical staff at Cleveland Clinic Florida, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship training program and Director of the Clinical Research Center Committee at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Eric Elton is Director of Therapeutic Endoscopy.  His primary areas of interest are pancreatobiliary endoscopy, enteral stent placement, and endoscopic mucosal resection, as well as the detection and prevention of colon cancer.  Following medical school and residency at the University of Pennsylvania, his fellowship training included a general gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Chicago and an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the Maine Medical Center.  Prior to coming to NorthShore University HealthSystem, he was Co-Director of Pancreatobiliary Endoscopy at the University of Wisconsin.  He is board certified in gastroenterology and is on the faculty of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.  He practices at Evanston Hospital.

Dr. Jacobs’ experience encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.  He has an academic appointment at Northwestern Medical School and is involved in the training of medical students and residents.  He performs procedures at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals as well as the Glen Endoscopy Center in Glenview where he holds the position of medical director.  The practice is open to new patients.

Yolandra Johnson, MD

Dr. Yolandra Johnson is a general gastroenterologist whose interests include the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Hepatitis C. Her gastroenterology fellowship training was at University of Chicago, where she cared for many patients with Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis and liver diseases. Her internal medicine training was at Yale University. She is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. She is a Senior Attending physician at NorthShore University HealthSystem and is on the faculty of the Northwestern University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Manoj Mehta, MD

Dr. Manoj Mehta is active in the training and education of Evanston Hospital and Northwestern University Medical Center resident physicians. A lifelong Chicagoan, he is a faculty member of University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Mehta's interests include therapeutic endoscopy, pancreatic and biliary procedures, bowel stenting, and management of complicated reflux disease. He is board certified in gastroenterology and serves as a consultant to the American Board of Internal Medicine, writing and reviewing board examination questions. He has lectured on a variety of subspecialty gastroenterology topics for various audiences. Dr. Mehta serves as a team gastroenterologist for Northwestern University athletes. He is a firm believer in patient education and patient participation in health care decisions. He has an office practice in Kenilworth and performs endoscopic procedures at Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals.

Mick Meiselman, MD

Dr. Mick Meiselman has interests in general gastroenterology and special expertise in medical and endoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pancreatobiliary tract disease, and colonoscopy. Dr. Meiselman received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1979. He completed his medical residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center/UCLA, and Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of California/San Francisco. He is board certified in gastroenterology. Dr. Meiselman is a Senior Attending physician at Evanston/Glenbrook Hospital and is on the faculty at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Meiselman is the Director of Quality Improvement - GI Division, NorthShore University HealthSystem. He was the 1993-1994 Evanston Hospital Attending Physician of the Year. Dr. Meiselman has been selected as one of Chicago Magazine's "Top Doctors" for the last two years. He was recently named Medical Director of the NorthShore University HealthSystem Esophageal Disease Center. He sees patients at his Kenilworth office and performs procedures at both Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals.

Dr. Nina H. Merel completed her undergraduate studies at Tufts University in Boston. She received her medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. Following and Internal Medicine residency at Rush Presbyterian Saint Luke's Medical Center, Dr. Merel completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago. She specializes in treating Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Merel welcomes all patients and gastroenterologic and hepatic disorders.

Neal Moller, MD

Dr. Neal Moller is a gastroenterologist specializing in general gastroenterology, colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. He has been in practice in Highland Park for over 17 years. He is on the staff of Highland Park Hospital, Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital and Lake Forest Hospital. He is the former Chairman of Medicine at Highland Park and the Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Evanston. He is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He has authorized multiple chapters on upper gastrointestinal disease and treatment. He is in partnership with three other gastroenterologists, all with expertise in specific areas of gastroenterology and the office provides a complete range of services. Dr. Moller is a graduate of the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and was a resident at Stanford University Hospitals. He did his felloship at the UCLA combined program for digestive diseases.

Jeffrey Nathanson, MD

Dr. Jeffrey Nathanson is a general gastroenterologist who welcomes patients with a spectrum of gastrointestinal conditions.   He has a particular interest in gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer screening and prevention.  Dr.  Nathanson received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and attended Stanford University School of Medicine.  He completed his internship and residency at the University of Chicago, followed by a year as Chief Resident.  He remained at the University of Chicago where he completed his gastroenterology fellowship. He is currently a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.  Dr. Nathanson sees patients at his Highland Park office and performs endoscopic procedures at Highland Park Hospital.

Thomas Neumann, MD

Dr. Thomas Neumann is a board certified gastroenterologist and has a dedicated patient following in the northwest suburbs. He received his B.A. degree from Oberlin College and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Wake Forest University. He is a graduate of the General Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship programs at Northwestern University. He has had an office conveniently located at Glenbrook Hospital's Professional building since 1978. Dr. Neumann performs the majority of his endoscopic procedures at Glenbrook Hospital.

Joel Retsky, MD

Dr. Joel Retsky, F.A.C.P., A.G.A.F., specializes in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease). He currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees for the Illinois Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). He has previously held other CCFA positions including Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee and Chairman of the Eduation Committee. Dr. Retsky is actively involved in teaching medical residents and students. Prior to practicing at his Highland Park office, Dr. Retsky was on the faculty at the University of Chicago Hospital. He has additional interest in colon cancer screening and performs endoscopic procedures at Highland Park Hospital. 

James L. Rosenberg, MD

Dr. James L. Rosenberg is a gastroenterologist with interests in general gastroenterology and special interests in inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and colon polyps. Dr. Rosenberg received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and trained in gastroenterology at the University of Chicago where he has been a faculty member. In the past, he has been Head of the Division of Gastroenterology for the Air Force for the Middle Western and New England States, Head of the Division of Gastroenterology at NorthShore University HealthSystem and Head of the Gastroenterology Laboratories at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He has been on the scientific advisory board of the Crohn's Colitis Foundation of America and has been a special honoree of that society. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Gastroenterology from NorthShore University HealthSystem. He is board certified in Gastroenterology. He is a Senior Attending physician at NorthShore University HealthSystem and is on the faculty at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He sees patients at Evanston Hospital and in his office in Kenilworth, IL.

Dr. Hemant Roy has a clinical and research focus in the prevention of gastrointestinal malignancies especially colorectal cancer.  His approach includes endoscopic surveillance, risk factor analysis (genetic and environmental) and the development of new cancer screening/prevention strategies.  Dr. Roy also leads the Division of Gastroenterology Residency Training Program.  Dr. Roy practices at both Evanston Hospital and at the Vernon Hills Specialty Suites.

Karen Sable, MD

Dr. Dhiren Shah is a General Gastroenterologist with interest in colonic disorders, reflux disease and liver diseases.  Dr. Shah performs colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, liver biopsies, flexible sigmoidoscopy, at Glenbrook Hospital and Vernon Hills Specialty Care Center.  He is a Clinical Instructor of Medicine with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.  

Dr. Alan Shapiro's interests are in gastrointestinal disorders and diseases especially inflammatory bowel disease and he welcomes all paitents with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.  He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Following an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dr. Shapiro completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Susannah Spiess, F.A.C.P., F.A.C.G., A.G.A.F., is a member of the Division of GI specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology.  She is medical director of the GI lab at Glenbrook Hospital and has been awarded special recognition from the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association for her achievements within the specialty of gastroenterology.  Her special areas of interest include women's issues as related to gastroenterology, colon cancer screening, and the medical education of patients as well as doctors in training.  Dr. Spiess has office hours and performs endoscopies at Glenbrook Hospital.

Tat-Kin Tsang, MD

Dr. Tat-Kin Tsang is a graduate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is Professor of Medicine on faculty at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He was the teaching chief of the Section of Gastroenterology for 15 years and associate fellowship director for 10 years. He was voted as attending physician of the year in 1985. His interests include pancreatobiliary diseases, H. pylori, peptic ulcer disease, interventional endoscopy and colon cancer detection. He has described seven endoscopic techniques, and a new method to identify H. pylori from stomach biopsies. He is the author of over 60 articles and a regular national conference presenter. He is a reviewer for six outstanding GI journals. He has appeared frequently on television with new updated information in the field of Gastroenterology. In addition, he is a consultant and a frequent conference speaker for many pharmaceutical companies. Despite his busy schedule, he remains a board certified practicing gastroenterologist first and foremost. Dr. Tsang performs procedures at both Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals. He supervises a basic research laboratory at Glenbrook Hospital with two post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. Jonathan Williams is a general gastroenterologist whose interests include colon cancer screening and colon polyps, gastrointestinal reflux disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.  Dr. Williams performs all GI procedures (Colonoscopy and Endoscopy) at Glenbrook and Evanston Hospitals.  His practice is primarily based at Glenbrook Hospital and his office is conveniently located in Glenbrook Hospital’s professional building. 

Dr. Williams completed his Gastroenterology training at Loyola University.  He has extensive experience with gastrointestinal bleeding, irritable bowel syndrome, complicated reflux disease and liver disorders.  He is committed to providing timely and comprehensive care.

Dr. Eugene Yen is a proud member of the NorthShore University HealthSystem Faculty Group Practice. His main areas of interest are in colon cancer prevention and in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). He trained at Washington University in St. Louis and the University of California San Francisco, where he gained exposure to pregnancy and fertility issues in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Yen currently sees patients and performs procedures at both Glenbrook and Evanston Hospital.
