The link Between GERD, Barrett's Esophagus and Esophageal Cancer

GERD is caused by the abnormal backflow, or reflux, of stomach acid and juices into the esophagus, the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach. Many individuals who have GERD also have Barrett's esophagus which can lead to cancer of the esophagus.

To determine if you are at risk for GERD, take the following risk assessment:

Do you suffer from heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest or throat) two or more times in a week?
Do your symptoms of heartburn become worse after eating?
Do your symptoms of heartburn wake you up at night?
If you belch, does it feel like food/fluid was regurgitated?
Do you have difficulty swallowing?
Do you feel like food is occasionally sticking in your chest?
Do you feel like you are choking?
Do you have frequent cough?
Do you experience a sore throat or hoarseness in the morning?
Do you take over the counter antacid or acid reducer (Pepcid, Tums, etc...) on a regular basis?
Do you suffer from chest pain?
Do you drink alcohol?
Do you smoke?
