Small Intestine

Below are diseases & conditions associated with the small intestine.  Your physician may recommend a procedure to diagnose or treat your condition.

Abetalipoproteinemia

An accumulation of fat and consequent malabsorption resulting in increased stool fat (white in appearance).

Celiac Disease (Gluten Sensitive Enteropathy and Celiac Sprue)

Characterized by poor food absorption and intolerance of gluten, which is a protein in wheat, oats, rye, barley and their products.

Crohn’s Disease

Mostly an inflammation of the intestinal lining (or anywhere between the mouth and anus). 

Duodenal Ulcer

Irritation and inflammation of the mucosa lining in the duodenum.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

 

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the umbrella that covers Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Malabsorption Syndrome

An abnormality of mucosal transport and/or intraluminal digestion of one or more dietary constituents.

Meckel's Diverticulum

 

A congenital anomaly of the GI tract, resulting from incomplete separation of the fetal gut from the yolk sac.

Short Bowel Syndrome

A malabsorptive disorder that occurs as a result of a massive resection of the small bowel.

Whipple’s Disease  

A rare disorder characterized by chronic diarrhea and progressive wasting.
