Community Projects

The Auxiliary supports the Hospitals and community of NorthShore University HealthSystem not only through their fundraising events, but also through various service projects. Your philanthropic donation of time, talent and treasure helps The Auxiliary serve the community with an annual nursing scholarship, educational presentations in area schools, flowers for NorthShore University HealthSystem patients, coloring books for Emergency Department waiting rooms, holiday hats for newborns born in December and much more. For more information or to volunteer for any of these projects, please call The Auxiliary office at 847.570.5095.

Hospital Outreach
The Hospital Outreach Committee touches the hearts of patients at Glenbrook and Evanston Hospitals by delivering flowers to patient rooms twice a year. Many volunteers find helping with this committee to be very rewarding, and their hard work putting together and distributing flowers is much appreciated by the patients they visit.

This committee also sponsors the Holiday Decorating Contest every year for departments at Glenbrook and Evanston Hospitals. Since NorthShore University HealthSystem employees are a significant part of the community we serve, spreading cheer within Hospital Departments is truly important.

Nursing Scholarship

2011 Auxiliary President, Madonna Tideman; Nursing Scholarship Chair, Amita Khandekar; winner Elise Allen; Glenbrook Hospital President, Doug Silverstein.

Every year, The Auxiliary offers a $5,000 college scholarship to a high school senior in our core service area who plans to pursue an education in the field of nursing. The current nursing shortage crisis has been strongly documented, both nationally and regionally. Since NorthShore is committed to the future of healthcare, Auxiliary members felt that this scholarship would be a well-directed effort.

All students with a desire to further their education in nursing at a college level are encouraged to apply each spring. Congratulations to the 2011 Nursing Scholarship Winner Elise Allen, who attended Evanston Township High School and will be attending Illinois Wesleyan’s Direct Nursing Program.

For more information about the scholarship, contact he Auxiliary office at 847.570.5095 or email The Auxiliary at auxiliary@northshore.org

Applications will be availiable in early 2012.

Second Grade ClassroomHospitals to Children

The Hospitals to Children committee visits second grade classrooms between the months of March and May to familiarize children with the NorthShore University HealthSystem Hospitals and reduce anxiety about visiting a hospital. Volunteers bring a slide-show presentation chronicling a child’s visit to the emergency room and showing the many people and places that make up a hospital. They also give mini plaster finger casts to the class and leave each student with a packet of information to take home to their parents.

Emergency Department Coloring Books
Coloring BookMaking a visit to the Emergency Room is always difficult – especially for children. The Auxiliary understands that keeping your mind on other things can help pass the time in the waiting room, and so we ensure that coloring books and crayons are always on-hand.

Auxiliary December Infant Gifts CommitteeDecember Infant Gifts
The Auxiliary December Infant Gifts Committee spends the year sewing winter hats for infants born at Evanston Hospital during the month of December. In the last week of November, the committee visits the Hospital to distribute red and white or blue and white hats to new mothers and babies and leaves enough on hand to last throughout the month.

This committee looks for volunteers who are handy with a needle to help with the sewing throughout the year.
