New Neuroscience Partnership Assembles One of Most Esteemed Physician Teams in U.S.
12/07/09 – The NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is pleased to welcome the renowned physicians of Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN) and their patients into its system of care. NorthShore and CINN physicians have successfully assembled one of the most experienced and respected teams in the country to treat spine and brain conditions.
The team will continue to deliver their critical services in neurosurgical and neurological care complementing what is currently provided by NorthShore.
A New Ensemble with a United Mission
"This is truly a remarkable partnership that will benefit our patients and the patients in the NorthShore University HealthSystem," said CINN Founder Leonard Cerullo, M.D., a board-certified neurosurgeon who brings more than 30 years of experience to NorthShore.
"NorthShore's excellence in specialty medicine and its strong network of primary care physicians will benefit our physicians and patients,” Dr. Cerullo said, “and the expertise of our physicians will complement their medical staff to the benefit of their patients."
In total, 17 CINN physicians joined NorthShore's well-regarded neurosciences team. “Our partnership combines two talented teams to provide the latest in progressive treatment options,” said Jim Maraganore, M.D., NorthShore's Ruth Cain Ruggles Chairman, Department of Neurology.
Maraganore recently joined NorthShore from the Mayo Clinic, where he served as the chair of the movement disorders program at three sites. Maraganore focuses on neuroscience research and has expanded NorthShore’s programs for Alzheimer’s disease, memory disorders, epilepsy, headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, sleep disorders, stroke, and women’s neurology.
"Separately we’ve reached milestones, but together we’ll discover breakthroughs in neurological care that will positively impact the lives of our patients," said Maraganore.
Pioneers in Technology and Research
CINN physicians have provided innovative treatments for patients with brain tumors, pioneered surgical spine solutions such as artificial disks, and championed new treatments for stroke and abnormalities of the blood vessels in the brain. CINN is also renowned for breaking new ground in minimally invasive techniques.
NorthShore is revered for its clinical excellence in pituitary surgery and advanced treatments for Parkinson’s disease, such as deep brain stimulation, as well as for the research of its physician-scientists – from the most basic investigations into the causes of neurological disease to the clinical trials of drugs or devices for treatment.
Advanced Patient Access, Acclaimed Academic Excellence
CINN patients join the benefit of NorthShore’s electronic medical records system that keeps critical health information readily accessible, anywhere in the NorthShore system, should a patient need to see another physician or make a trip to the emergency room.
Patients may also take advantage of NorthShore’s secure website, NorthShoreConnect.org, which allows patients to manage their health from a personal computer. Making an appointment, reviewing test results, renewing prescriptions, and contacting a physician has never been easier.
NorthShore’s teaching partnership with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine illustrates its commitment to advancements in medical education and the advantages that our patients receive from one of the country’s most prominent teaching hospitals.
