Men Should Get to Know their Family Physician

Men can be reluctant patients. Often the only time they see a physician is when they are very sick or when they get pushed to get a checkup.  Men that don’t see their physician regularly, according to Dr. Edward Blumen, are missing out on an important aspect of health care – the doctor/patient relationship.

“It’s important for patients to have a knowledgeable advocate in the health arena,” said Dr. Blumen. “Men should have an established relationship with a physician they trust and can turn to for guidance.”

As men age they, like women, are more susceptible to certain diseases and require preventive tests to insure good health. Dr. Blumen says it’s particularly important to keep an eye on blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar as millions of men may suffer from the silent killers that may lead to heart disease and/or stroke.

“Much of the timing for these tests depends on the man’s age and his family medical history,” said Dr. Blumen. “For example, normally colon screening begins at age 50 but if they have a close relative who has had colorectal cancer, testing should begin years earlier. However, if you don’t have a family physician who knows your history, you could be neglecting these important tests and end up unnecessarily sick.”

Specific tests for men include rectal exams and the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test which screen for changes in the prostate. Sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction or sexually transmitted diseases should also be discussed with your family physician.

“Physical exams are different for each patient,” said Dr. Blumen. “Knowing the patient’s family and medical history as well as their lifestyle issues, such as whether or not they exercise, help us tailor their exam and perform important preventive tests. Most importantly we want to make sure they are able to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
