Gene Chiao, MD, FACP, Director of the Esophageal Motility Program
|
1/28/2005 - The new Esophageal Motility Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem, headed by
Gene Chiao, MD, FACP, is designed to offer a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with benign esophageal conditions.
Esophageal disorders covered by the Program include:
-
Oropharyngeal or esophageal dysphagia
-
Esophageal strictures
-
Esophageal spasms
-
Zenker’s diverticulum
-
Achalasia
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
-
Hiatal or paraesophageal hernia
The Motility Program will offer esophageal manometry and ambulatory reflux recording. The esophageal manometry can aid in the diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders such as esophageal spasm, nutcracker esophagus and achalasia. The ambulatory reflux recording involves a 24-hour data collection of gastroesophageal reflux. The reflux events are analyzed in relation to the patient’s symptoms. Dr. Chiao is one of the first physicians in the Chicago metropolitan area and Lake County region with specialty training in the use of this state-of-the-art impedance-pH reflux recording. This new recording technology provides a more accurate diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Physicians can refer their patients for esophageal testing alone or for both esophageal testing and a comprehensive consultation.
Dr. Chiao is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He received fellowship training at Northwestern University and has been in practice since 1994. He was previously on faculty as an associate professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine where he was the director of the Indiana University GI Motility Center.
