Thrombectomy is a procedure performed to remove thrombus (blood clot) from blood vessels. This is done in conjunction with a cardiac catheterization.

What to Expect

You will most likely be admitted to the hospital the day of the procedure. The Cardiologist may prescribe medication to help you relax before the procedure. The Cardiac Cath Lab staff will clean and shave your skin where the catheter will be inserted. Once in the procedure room, you will be situated on an X-Ray table and covered with sterile drapes. A local anesthetic is given by injection to keep you from feeling any pain.

A catheter is inserted and gently guided toward your heart while your doctor is watching the advancement of the catheter on a video monitor. The catheter position is changed multiple times throughout the test. Dye will be injected into the catheter in certain areas of your heart chamber and arteries to help visualize the areas. When the thrombus or clot is seen, a special catheter advanced to the site and acts a vacuum that aspirates the clot. When the procedure is finished, the catheter will be removed and the insertion site will be firmly pressed on. You will need to remain lying down for a few hours to prevent bleeding before you are discharged.

What to Do

The night before your catheterization, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight. You will need to arrive at the hospital at least one hour prior to your appointment, the time will be specified by your physician office. If you wear glasses, please bring them so you may read consent forms and educational material which will be provided to you when you arrive.
