A procedure performed to evaluate the blood flow to the heart muscle at increased activity. Your EKG and blood pressure will be monitored before, during and after walking on a treadmill. Nuclear images will be taken at rest and after exercise.

What to Expect

This test has two parts:

The first part of the test takes place in the Nuclear Medicine Department where you will receive an injection of a radioisotope. There will be a resting period to allow the radioisotope to circulate, then nuclear images will be obtained.

The second part of your test, in Cardiac Imaging, will entail obtaining a brief health history, completing consent forms, setting up for an EKG, having an IV started, and exercising on a treadmill. Toward the end of your exercise, you will receive a second injection of the radioisotope. Again, there will be a resting period to allow for circulation of the radioisotope. The test will conclude with a final set of nuclear images. The total test time will be approximately 3 hours. The formal results of your test will be available to your physician within 24 hours. Your doctor may also be contacted by telephone immediately afterwards for abnormal results.
